Spending and Taxes
Illinois has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. The only way to lower the tax burden is to stop chronic, out of control overspending.
Start with the spending, not the tax bill
Bill's argument on his Goals page begins with a cause, not a complaint: “The only way to reduce heavy tax burden on Illinoisans is to stop chronic and out of control overspending.”
He puts the same idea in a line meant to be remembered. In his words, “Illinois has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.”
Everything else on this page follows from that one sentence: he starts with the spending, and the tax burden is what he says follows from it.

The figures Bill himself cites
Bill's published page makes two claims about Illinois, and both are his, not ours. He writes that “Over the past decade Illinois has had 22 tax hikes,” and that “Illinois has the highest tax burden in the nation.”
Those statements come from his 2022 Goals page and are reproduced here as he wrote them. They are his characterisation of the record, so weigh them as his claims.
For a family in Morton or a farm outside Hopedale, those are the numbers behind the argument he makes. Read them as his case, and judge it for yourself.
What Bill says he will do about it
He has named the goal in plain terms: reduce the tax burden on Illinoisans by ending the overspending behind it. That is the commitment he made on his Goals page, and it is the one we can point to.
He hasn't published a line-by-line budget on that page, and we won't invent one. Ask him directly at (309) 840-0969 or bill@billhauter.com, or meet him at an upcoming event.
